Early Outcomes in Targeted Muscle Reinnervation for Traumatic Amputations

Abstract Background Traumatic amputees commonly experience residual limb pain (RLP) and phantom (PLP) which present major barriers to rehabilitation. An evolving treatment, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), shows promise in reducing these symptoms. While initial data are encouraging, existing studies low power, more research is needed assess the long-term outcomes of TMR. We results self-reported outcome surveys distributed major-limb than 1 year post-TMR were compared with similar from a landmark randomized control trial for context. Methods Data was obtained 17 adult traumatic who using numerical rating scale Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System survey tool. Results 2019 by Dumanian et al assessed TMR versus standard care (SC) after amputation demonstrated improvement scores post-TMR. There statistically significant reduction this cohort amputees' RLP worst relative comparison study's SC (without TMR). In general, there no difference between cohorts.
